The BRC internship program is designed to give aspiring lactation consultants the clinical hours necessary to sit for the certification exam. The BRC currently has three interns learning the ropes of lactation consultation. Its innovative program allows interns the experience to help mothers from birth to toddlerhood and gives them an opportunity to practice and hone ways to support and protect the breastfeeding couple. A quote from a BRC intern....

"Colette,
You are an inspiration to me and many others. You are absolutely needed in the lactation community with your fresh perspective and easy-going nature. Furthermore, without you, I wouldn't even be close to realizing my dreams. Thanks for believing in me!" - J.M. Sellersville, PA

This talk will try to address some of the special concerns and challenges for moms who have had c-sections, postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, preterm birth, postpartum depression, and other complications. We will focus on how to generally support these moms, and also the unique considerations they may have when they want to breastfeed their babies. Guest Speaker: Randi Leigh (see bio above).

Are you pregnant or trying to conceive? Do you feel overwhelmed by the prospect of selecting a care provider/birth attendant? Are you confused by all the medical jargon and terminology you hear related to your pregnancy and the birth of your child? This informal conversation will be an opportunity to broadly review several topics of interest to pregnant or soon-to-be pregnant women, including the different types of medical providers and differences in their training, birth settings, and other considerations. We will also define some of the confusing medical terms and procedures you might encounter during your pregnancy, labor, and the birth of your child. FREE OF CHARGE! May 10 – Meeting For Postpartum Moms! --- 10 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. – “Great Expectations: Normal Changes in the Postpartum Period and Coping with the Unexpected” by Randi Leigh who is a 4th year medical student at Drexel University with a Master’s in Public Health.

Many women find that their experience of birth and/or the period immediately afterwards is not what they expected. While some women struggle to cope with processing an experience of birth itself that was upsetting or simply did not go according to plan, others struggle with normal physical changes that occur in the postpartum period which they did not anticipate. In either case new moms are sometimes left feeling isolated, alone, and disappointed that their experience has not lived up to their expectations. This talk will be an opportunity to discuss how to cope with a birth experience that failed to live up to your expectations. We’ll also cover normal changes to expect during the postpartum period, and the warning signs to look for that might be a sign of something out of the ordinary. In addition we’ll talk about some of the resources and supports available to new moms in the greater Philadelphia area during the postpartum period. FREE OF CHARGE!
