The. Bash. What exactly is this “Bash” that they talk about at the Breastfeeding Resource Center? (FYI, the Bash became formally known as A Night in the Garden when it moved to Morris Arboretum last year) I’m still not sure why, but years ago when I first heard of the Bash, I couldn’t picture exactly what the Bash was. Was it a night out where people got together to breastfeed? To talk about breastfeeding? To encourage others to breastfeed? I didn’t know what the Bash was, but one thing I did know is that it wasn’t for me.
Now, I’m five years removed from that first encounter and I wish I could give my old self a little clarity on the subject. Allow me to share with you what the older and wiser me knows about the Bash now. The BRC Bash is a fun party in a beautiful setting, a time to hang out with existing friends and meet new ones, a night out without kids, and a fundraiser for the BRC. Actually, it’s not just a fundraiser, the BRC Bash is THE fundraiser of the year. At the Bash, the BRC aims to bring in the majority of the donations to fund current programs and support groups, to be able to offer treatment on a sliding scale to families, and to cultivate support for the future. In short, the Bash fundraising is what allows the BRC to serve our community, our mothers, and our families like it does.
The BRC Bash is mothers, fathers, partners, family members, local business owners, support group members, lactation consultants, local physicians, donors and board members all gathered for a fun night out to support an amazing cause. It’s definitely a little different than I had originally pictured!
The Bash is held at the Morris Arboretum and the cost of the ticket includes guided tours of the gardens, heavy hors d’oeuvres, open bar, and dancing. Simple decorations add to the ambiance of the venue, and the place can’t help but feel magical. There’s a 50/50 raffle which is always a big hit, along with both a silent and live auction which includes items like beach getaways, Disney trips, museum admissions, and local sports memorabilia.
This night out sounds like a lot of fun, and it is. But, I know as a young mother it is so easy to have other priorities than yourself. This year’s bash takes place on Thursday, October 3. I encourage you… consider coming to the BRC Bash. Yes, for a night out for you. But, even more importantly, to help other mothers. To help other families. To help other babies like your own. Be there so you can truly make a difference in these lives.
