June is PRIDE month. The composition of the family has shifted with increased diversification. Social recognition and acceptance of individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) have led to a new population of parents. The BRC strives to educate our staff on inclusivity. We want all families to feel welcome. When I started in this business, I was passionate about maternal/infant health, breastfeeding, and meeting moms, dads, and babies. Fast forward a few years, and we realize that our dialogue, educational tools, and so many other things have to change. How horrible it must feel to come across healthcare professionals and educational material about a subject you’re trying to learn, but you as a person are completely ignored! Most people hate change, but I am the exact opposite! Training our staff, updating our handouts, trying to use more inclusive terms when meeting with families has been something we will continue to work on to be sure everyone feels welcome. And I ask you to let me know if there is anything that makes you feel excluded. We will change it! Happy PRIDE month!
