The Holly Program
Insurance coverage and income should not hinder families from receiving necessary lactation care. The Holly Program subsidizes the cost for our clients whose insurance doesn’t cover appointments. We asked these families to pay on a sliding scale in previous years. At the beginning of 2024, we began offering FREE, UNLIMITED visits for these families! We believe that parents who need lactation care should all have equal access to care!
In 2023, of those whose insurance did not cover:
- 188 families paid $20 per visit
- 26 families received a discount
- 12 paid full price
Interestingly, since we started offering free visits rather than the sliding scale, the amount of people taking advantage of the Holly Program has grown exponentially. What does this tell us? Paying even a small amount was too much for some families. As of February 27, 2024, we have already 90 visits taking advantage of the Holly Program!

The Looks Like Me Scholarship for Aspiring IBCLCs
Urmila is an OT from NJ. She travels over an hour to the BRC as access to great internship programs is limited around the country!
This scholarship is for aspiring IBCLCs who identify as black, indigenous, and/or persons of color. It was created to increase diversity in the IBCLC profession.
According to the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP), “Breastfeeding disparities among African American mothers and other ethnicities persist due to systemic factors in communities of color like lack of quality support, poor hospital practice, the predatory marketing of breast milk substitutes and insufficient local, state, and national policies that address social determinants of health.” This disparity has detrimental effects throughout communities of color and urgently needs to be addressed. By opening access for Black and other people of color to enter the field, we hope families can experience increased support for their breastfeeding journey.
In 2023, three of our aspiring IBCLCs received the scholarship! This year, in 2024, we already have two interns who identify as women of color. Learn more about the Looks Like Me Scholarship.
Annual Program Cost: $15,000

The Pump It Up Program
New parents might be separated from their babies for various reasons that would necessitate pumping milk, from returning to work to unforeseen emergencies. Access to quality breast pumps can positively impact a lactating parent’s ability to continue providing milk for their baby.
The BRC Pump It Up! Program subsidizes the cost of a hospital-grade pump for low-income families and enables the purchase of kits for donated Spectra Pumps. We were able to give 127 Spectra pumps with new kits and 7 hospital-grade electric breast pumps.
Annual Program Cost: $5,000
